Battlefields

KZN has one of the largest concentration of battlefields in South Africa. Shaka's Way is a route from Eshowe to Vryheid, via Ulundi. Tours into this region enlighten tourists of the rich local history, covering forts, battlefields as well as other artefact's of wars between British, Voortrekkers and Zulus. A visit to Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift are highly recommended.

Crocodile Creek

On the banks of the Tongaat River at Compensation, conducted tours offer an insight into their habitat, with the the ability to view these reptiles from near, yet in complete safety,

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve

One and a half hours drive from Durban, with excellent nature trails and views of the Gorge. High sandstone cliffs dominate this 24km long gorge carved out by the Umzimkulwana River. Wildlife include bird life, leopards, antelope and baboons.

Ulundi

The Zulu name, Ulundi, means "High Place". The town has become the political centre of the Zulu people. Ulundi lies at the hub of the old Zulu kingdom which lost its independence to colonial expansion. The last battle of the Anglo-Zulu War was fought nearby in 1879. The KwaZulu Cultural Museum houses interesting displays relating to Zulu history and archaeology. Accommodation in beehive huts is available nearby.

Zulu Villages

Authentic Zulu kraals (villages) such as Shakaland, Kwabhekithunga Kraal and Stewart's Farm, near Eshowe, offer accommodation and the opportunity of experiencing traditional Zulu culture first hand.
